1 Cosmetology License, 13 States: What AZ’s New Multistate License Really Means

What if earning your cosmetology license in Arizona could open doors far beyond Arizona?

For future beauty professionals, that’s no longer just a “what if.”

Arizona has officially launched the Cosmetology Multistate Compact License, giving qualifying Arizona cosmetologists the ability to practice in participating states with one multistate license.

And for anyone considering a career in cosmetology, this is a pretty big deal.

What Is the Cosmetology Multistate Compact?

Traditionally, cosmetology licenses are issued by individual states. If a licensed cosmetologist wanted to work across state lines, they could face additional applications, licensing requirements, fees, or other steps depending on the state.

The Cosmetology Licensure Compact is designed to make that process much more flexible.

Beginning in September 2026, qualifying Arizona cosmetologists can select a multistate cosmetology license when applying for their initial license, through reciprocity, or when their existing Arizona license is up for renewal.

The multistate license allows them to practice cosmetology in other participating compact states without obtaining an individual cosmetology license in each one.

Where Can Arizona Cosmetologists Work With a Multistate License?

As of October 2026, the compact includes 13 participating states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia

And the opportunity could continue to grow as additional states join the compact.

That means an Arizona cosmetology education can prepare you for a career with more geographic flexibility than ever before.

Why Is This Such a Big Deal for Future Cosmetologists?

Beauty careers have always offered the opportunity to build something uniquely yours. Now, a multistate license can add another benefit: mobility.

Imagine living primarily in Arizona but spending part of the year in Colorado. Or having the opportunity to work an event in another participating state. Maybe your career eventually involves travel, multiple salon locations, seasonal work, or opportunities you haven’t even thought of yet.

For eligible cosmetologists, the compact can make pursuing those opportunities significantly simpler.

Instead of maintaining separate licenses in multiple participating states, a cosmetologist can hold one multistate credential through their home state.

More Flexibility Can Mean More Career Opportunities

When you’re choosing a career, it can be hard to know exactly what your life will look like five or ten years from now.

You may know where you want to live today, but careers evolve. People travel. Families relocate. New opportunities come up.

Having a license that can be recognized across multiple participating states gives cosmetologists another layer of flexibility as they build their careers.

That could mean exploring opportunities in salons outside Arizona, working in more than one state, traveling for professional opportunities, or simply knowing that your career has room to move with you.

For students entering the beauty industry now, that flexibility is exciting.

Do You Need More Training to Work in Another Compact State?

One of the biggest advantages of Arizona’s multistate license is that eligible cosmetologists don’t have to complete additional education hours or continuing education simply because another participating state has different licensing requirements.

Your Arizona credentials serve as the foundation for your multistate license.

However, cosmetologists are still responsible for following the laws, scope of practice, and sanitation requirements of whichever state they’re physically working in.

So while your license can travel, the rules governing the services you perform may change from state to state.

What Happens If You Move Permanently?

There is one important distinction: the multistate license is designed for cosmetologists who maintain Arizona as their primary state of residence while practicing in multiple participating states.

If you permanently move to another state, you’ll need to establish your license in your new home state according to that state’s requirements.

Think of the compact as making it easier for your career to cross state lines, rather than eliminating licensing requirements when you permanently relocate.

Who Qualifies for an Arizona Multistate Cosmetology License?

To qualify through the Arizona Barbering and Cosmetology Board, cosmetologists must hold an active Arizona cosmetology license in good standing, maintain Arizona as their primary state of residence, and pay the applicable licensing fees.

And there’s another important detail for anyone exploring beauty school programs: the compact currently applies specifically to cosmetologists.

Arizona aestheticians, nail technicians, barbers, and cosmetology instructors still need to follow applicable reciprocity or licensing processes if they want to practice in another state.

Your Beauty Career Can Go Further Than You Think

When you enroll in cosmetology school, you’re not just learning how to cut, color, and style hair.

You’re building skills that can become the foundation of a career.

Maybe you’ll find your dream salon right here in Arizona. Maybe you’ll eventually work behind the scenes at events, build a clientele in more than one state, become an educator, or discover a career path you don’t even know exists yet.

The beauty industry is full of possibilities, and Arizona’s new multistate cosmetology license gives future professionals even more room to explore them.
