Why Becoming an Instructor Is the Right Move for You

It’s very common for professionals in any industry to look for new opportunities or avenues that will enrich their careers and spark new interests. Beauty professionals who have spent ample time working in salons or spas honing their skills and mastering their craft may feel it’s time for a new challenge.

For those who have a passion for teaching and wish to pass down their knowledge and experiences, transitioning to instructing can feel like a natural decision. Making this career move can be very fulfilling and offers several unique advantages, such as:

Making a Difference

Chances are you first decided to become a beauty professional because you desire a career where you could help make a difference in someone’s life. As a cosmetologist or esthetician, you help clients look and feel their best, which boosts their self-confidence and the way they view themselves.

As an instructor, you still make a difference in the beauty industry, just in a different way. Instead of serving clients, you will be encouraging the professional development of aspiring beauty professionals. By imparting your knowledge and experiences to your students, you can inspire vision, help eliminate bad habits, nurture creativity, and instill on-the-job wisdom. As an educator, you’re their coach, mentor, and one of their first authentic connections to the beauty industry.

More Advancement Opportunities

You might think that by becoming a cosmetology or esthetician instructor that your future career opportunities and room for advancement are limited. However, the role of an instructor can provide new avenues that may not be available otherwise.

During your teaching career, opportunities for administrators or department directors of beauty institutions may present themselves. Regardless of where you wish to take your career, being an instructor can open up numerous doors to help you reach your professional goals.

Still Have the Opportunity for Creativity

Cosmetology is a form of art. Creating a finished product that the client will love takes a certain level of creativity. Being able to use that creativity may be one of the reasons why you chose to become a beauty professional in the first place. As a beauty instructor, you can still use your creativity to educate students in a variety of ways. For example, instructors can leverage their creativity when creating lesson plans to make classes fun and engaging for students.

At Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes, our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded education that sets them up for success in their future professional endeavors. The cosmetology and esthetician instructor program offered at our Tucson campus is designed to help future instructors grow into their new roles seamlessly. To better accommodate the needs of different students, Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes offers both daytime and evening classes.

The 350-hour program is broken down into five sections:

  • Arizona state rules and regulations (80 hours)
  • Curriculum development (100 hours)
  • Classroom and clinic oversight (100 hours)
  • Professional development (30 hours)
  • Educator certification (40 hours)

Successful instructors are ones who not only effectively communicate the curriculum but also know how to establish healthy relationships with their students. Along with learning how to present lesson plans, students will discover how to create these bonds for when they step into the role of educator.

Arizona state law requires student educators to become licensed after completing their training. Once you complete the program, you will be eligible to take the theory and practical competency exams required to earn your Arizona state licensure.
