Our Hairstylist Program Curriculum

For our hairstyling programs at Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes, the curriculum is slightly different for each campus and in different states, but they all teach similar topics. To explore the curriculum of our hairstyling program, we will use our 1,200-hour hairstyling program at our Provo, UT, location as an example. The curriculum is broken down into four phases:

Phase One

Phase one of the hairstyling curriculum introduces the fundamentals of hairstyling. Students will learn about:

  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Hair coloring
  • Haircutting
  • Hairstyling
  • Working with all texture of hair from 2A to 4C
  • Time management
  • Ethics
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Salesmanship
  • Disinfection and sanitation

This phase also covers safe work practices and safety requirements, along with state laws, rules, and regulations for the state where the program is held.

Phase Two

Phase two has a focus on improving and strengthening hairstyling skills. Students will practice their cutting, coloring, and styling skills and will be introduced to advanced cutting, coloring, styling, and perming techniques. They also learn foundational techniques and how to combine them to achieve new results. There is also an emphasis on state board exam preparation and business building in this phase.

Phase Three

Phase three of the hairstyling program is focused on chemical texture and how to perform chemical texture services like permanent waves, relaxers, etc. There is an emphasis on using chemical products safely and effectively and on various hair types and textures, from 2A to 4C. Students will also learn about hairstyling science, including the human body, the properties of hair, hair and scalp disorders, and more.

Phase Four

The final phase of the hairstyling program is focused on preparing students for the state board written and practical competency exams. Every week students will practice theoretical principle scenarios and practical exams based on the requirements set by the Utah State Board of Cosmetology, or the state boards in Colorado or Arizona.

Once they have completed all phases of the program, students will be ready to take the required practical and theory examinations for the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (or licensing body in Colorado or Arizona) to become licensed as hairstylists. Program graduates will receive an Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes diploma, transcript, and a state record of completion.

What Does Hairstyling Involve?

Many people think of hairstyling as cutting and coloring hair and doing the occasional updo. Although hairstylists perform these duties often, the career encompasses a lot more techniques and services. Along with cutting and trimming hair, the job duties of a hairstylist can include:

  • Styling hair, including curling, straightening, and doing blowouts, updos, or braids
  • Coloring and highlighting hair
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Massaging and treating the scalp
  • Applying hair extensions
  • Providing hair treatments
  • Recommending hair products or tools
  • Sanitizing workstations and tools

Hairstylists also engage with customers, schedule appointments, answer questions about products or styles, and more. Choosing a career as a hairstylist can offer several benefits, including different work environments like salons, spas, beauty bars, etc., and a strong job outlook. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects the overall employment for barbers, hairdressers, hairstylists, cosmetologists, and related jobs is expected to grow 7% through 2033, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Hairstylists also can make lasting relationships with clients and experience a rewarding feeling knowing they help boost someone’s confidence and give them the look they want. Training to become a licensed hairstylist can set you up for a successful and satisfying career.
