About Our Cosmetology Program and Curriculum

Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatments and services. To become a certified cosmetologist, you must complete a cosmetology program and pass a licensing exam. Our cosmetology curriculum at Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes teaches students a wide range of cosmetology services, along with the knowledge needed to pass the licensing exam. With a mix of in-classroom instruction and hands-on training in our beauty salons, students gain invaluable experience not available at other beauty schools. Services students learn to provide include:

  • Effectively working on all hair textures from 2A to 4C
  • Natural Hair Styling and Setting Techniques
  • Thermal Styling and Event Styling Techniques
  • Haircutting and Barbering Techniques
  • Hair Color Applications
  • Hair Extension Techniques
  • Permanent Wave Applications
  • Natural Nail Care and Artificial Nails
  • Waxing Techniques
  • Facials
  • Makeup
  • Money by Qnity – Career and Financial Planning
  • Business Building
  • Social Media and Marketing
  • Well-Being and self care

Along with classroom and hands-on practice, students at our cosmetology schools also get access to more learning opportunities. These include workshops, master series, opportunities to study abroad, and chances to attend the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) ceremony and London Fashion Week events.

Cosmetology Career Opportunities

One of the main motivators for people joining the cosmetology industry, besides a passion for beauty, is the flexibility it offers. Cosmetologists can choose to specialize in one service or offer many. They work in many different job environments, like salons, spas, beauty stores, beauty schools, and more. Often, people with cosmetology licenses work for themselves and decide which days and times they will work. Another aspect of flexibility is the number of different jobs you can do with a cosmetology degree, such as:

  • Hairstylist: Performs haircuts, highlights, updos, and other hair services in salons and spas
  • Salon owner/manager: Oversees the operation of the salon, supervises the stylists, engages with clients, and more
  • Hair coloring specialist: Focuses on techniques like ombre, balayage, foils, and glosses to alter a client’s hair color
  • Permanent waving specialist: Provides a chemical hair treatment called a perm to curl or wave the client’s hair
  • Sales representative: Visits salons, spas, and beauty stores to offer stylists and sellers the latest beauty products
  • Fashion show stylist: Creates unique hair and makeup looks for fashion shows, whether local for small businesses or international for major designers
  • Nail artist: Performs manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, and other related services for clients in spas and salons
  • Makeup artist: Does makeup looks on clients for special events, photoshoots, films, etc.

Cosmetologists may also start doing one job and transition to another later in their career as the industry and their interests evolve, offering additional flexibility.
