Inspire Greatness Aveda Institute Provo is located in the heart of a college town. Provo is the central hub for not just one major university but two! Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University are both located within a few miles of the Aveda Institute Provo campus. What does this mean? It means that our campus is in a place with lots of people just like you. Also, this means that there are a lot of places and activities for a good time!
Because our campus is located in such an exciting area, many of our students move from out of state. They move away from home to pursue an education in beauty and live the college life with their friends. To help aspiring Inspire Greatness students, here are some tips on relocating to begin your journey in the beauty industry.
Finding a Place
Because this area has so many college students, finding a place to live can be a little bit competitive depending on what time of year you are looking. To find a place to live in Provo or the surrounding area, there are a few things you need to know.
Type of Housing
Brigham Young University has certain rules and regulations that its students have to live by to be students there. One of these regulations is that students have to live in approved housing with rules and standards. Examples of these housing rules include:
- No members of the opposite sex allowed in bedroom
- No members of the opposite sex allowed in your house after midnight on weeknights
- No alcohol, drugs, tobacco, coffee, or tea
- Must abide by BYU dress and grooming standards
What does this mean for you? When you are looking for a place to live while you go to beauty school at Aveda Institute Provo, you need to decide if you want to live in BYU housing or not. If it is something that is important to you, ask about it when you inquire about an apartment or house. If you don’t want to live in BYU housing, you can look for non-approved housing in Provo or you can look for housing outside of Provo. UVU housing is another option for those who are not interested in living in BYU approved housing.
KSL? What’s that?
Craigslist is a very popular way for students to find affordable housing. Use this resource when looking for a place to live in Provo or the surrounding area, but also learn how to use KSL. It’s a classifieds platform, like Craigslist, but is mostly for Utah and a few surrounding states. It’s very popular – even more so than Craigslist. So, when you are looking for a place to rent, use both of them. Your chances of finding the perfect spot will be greater.
There are other tools you can use to find an apartment or house to rent like Apartments.com, Zillow, or Trulia. Whatever combination of tools you use, make sure you check on them constantly. Anytime a new listing comes up that matches what you need, inquire. You need to be on top of it and be one of the first with your foot in the door, especially at the end of summer when students are flocking back to school.
Geography
Another useful tip is to choose a place to live that is in the right location. If you have transportation to get to and from school, you can look in surrounding areas like Orem and Lindon. There are also places to live that are within walking distance of our campus, shopping, and dining to make your life easier if you don’t have transportation. Public transit is another useful tool that students can use to get to and from school. You can check out Utah Transit Authority to see if you can make a train or bus route work for you.
Finding Roomies
Another thing to think about when you are getting ready to get your own place in the area and start going to Aveda Institute Provo is who you are going to live with.
Live With Friends: If you are going to live with friends who are also going to school in the area, coordinate with them. If they already have a place, figure out if there’s room for you. If they are moving to Utah around the same time as you, find somewhere that has room for you and your friends to rent out. Splitting rent with your besties makes living cheaper and more fun!
Finding New Friends: In the event that you don’t have any friends headed to Utah for school, finding a place to live with roommates is a great way to start making some. There are a lot of apartments and houses that already have tenants that are searching for one or two more people to move in. This makes living more affordable and offers you a chance to make some great friends!
Making the Leap
One of the hardest parts of relocating to a new place is going into the unknown and figuring things out. It can be scary, but don’t worry about it. When you start school at Aveda Institute Provo, you’re joining a family. Your educators and peers will be there to help you every step of the way!
