28 Mar Alumni Spotlight: Sariah Lee

At Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes, we’re always so proud of our students and what they accomplish after graduating! That can make it hard for us to choose just one alumnus to feature on our blog because we have so many alumni we want to talk about! We wanted to highlight Sariah Lee for killing it on social media and in the Aveda network!

About Sariah Lee

Sariah is one of our more recent graduates, and was an exemplary student while with us at Aveda Institutes! She traveled with us to London Fashion Week and also participated in the North American Hairstyling Awards. She was a model student, and is now an outstanding cosmetologist with Pura Vida Salon & Spa in Park City, Utah. Here are some of the questions we got to ask Sariah:

Why did you choose Aveda Institute?

“I chose the Aveda Institute because I wanted to be part of an organization that is innovative, creative, focused on moving into the future while still caring for the world around them.”

Why did you choose to stay with Aveda after graduation?

“I chose to stay with Aveda after graduation for a few reasons:

  1. I love the mission and wanted to be a part of a salon that lived up to the mission.
  2. I absolutely love the color line and can’t imagine using another one.
  3. The people who are part of the Aveda network are so supportive of one another and care for each other. I wanted to surround myself with those people.”

What are your most popular salon services?

“One of my most popular services in the salon is my men’s haircuts.”

What is the greatest lesson you learned in school?

“The greatest lesson I learned in school is that I will never stop learning, even after I’ve been in the hair business for years. It’s never too late to learn, and you shouldn’t be afraid to fail, because from failing, you learn.”

Who is your Aveda icon and why?

My Aveda icon is Anne Skubis (the Director of Marketing for Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes). She always has fun, fresh, creative work. More than just being a fantastic makeup artist, Anne also engages with people on a personal level, and you can tell that she truly cares about the people around her. Anne strives to inspire people and lift them up, and I aspire to live up to her example.

What are your top three tips for social media?

  1. ”Engage and interact with your followers. Respond to their likes and comments.
  2. Consistency is key. You want your page to be aesthetically pleasing and focused on what you want to convey to the audience. Is it hair? Makeup? Eyelash extensions? Stay consistent.
  3. It’s fun to post pictures of you in action because it makes your page more personal and you can more easily connect with the audience.”

What is your greatest accomplishment since graduating?

Two of my greatest achievements since graduating are:

  1. Finding a salon that is so supportive and positive.
  2. Building a consistent clientele.

It is one of the biggest compliments to me when someone decides they want to come back to me for their hair, makeup, or eyelash extensions.

Follow Sariah

If you want to see more of Sariah’s work and what she’s up to now, follow her on Facebook or Instagram! If you want to see what her salon is up to, you can check them out as well on Instagram. We’re excited to see all of the works of art Sariah will create in her career!

Aveda Institute Phoenix Student Jessica Baldwin at New York Fashion Week.

17 Oct Student Spotlight shines bright on Jessica Baldwin from Aveda Institute Phoenix

Aveda Institute Phoenix Student Jessica Baldwin

Aveda Institute Phoenix Student Jessica Baldwin

Aveda Institute Phoenix Student Jessica Baldwin captured Aveda’s attention this September when she had the rare opportunity to assist Antoinette Beenders on a Facebook live tutorial with American Salon, garnering over 240K views! Jessica was part of the Inspire Greatness delegation working behind the scenes with Aveda at New York Fashion Week. We invited her to share a little about her background and experience as an Aveda Institute student. In her own words, here is Jessica’s story.

I left the world of Investment Banking/Finance/Marketing having been a Personal Executive Assistant over the years to finally pursue my heart’s desire and passion to immerse myself in the world of the beauty industry. I was also a military spouse for ten years, living around and outside the US in a supportive role to my then spouse. When I decided to go to Aveda Institute Phoenix, I was on the brink of some very difficult times that included much loss in my life but I chose to take the plunge – eyes wide open with both feet and follow my heart’s desire.

I chose Aveda Institute Phoenix because I wanted a quality education – the BEST. Aveda aligned with both my world and personal views on many levels. Aveda Institute students have amazing opportunities to connect with some of the most successful, inspiring, innovative, hard-working and passionate educators and industry leaders. I remember my very 1st Master Series experience as a new cosmetology student. David Wagner was coming to see us! Reading his book had a great impact on me. I sat in the front row, pen and paper in hand. I was ready to listen, learn, and absorb the knowledge and wisdom he so graciously imparted to us. We aren’t just styling hair; we are creating an experience and touching the hearts and minds of those we care for in our chair. It was a very cathartic moment for me, sharing space and energy with David and those in the room.

I applied to participate in New York Fashion Week after Educator Leslie Allison-Williams approached me about the opportunity. She was so encouraging and uplifting and she “saw me.” Somehow deep inside the tenderness of my heart she saw my passion for touching lives in this line of work and sometimes all a student needs is encouragement. If there is one thing I could ever suggest to educators, it is to be sincere and genuine in your approach. People know when someone is being authentic and I felt that authenticity with Leslie. She saw things inside of me that I had not yet acknowledged and gave me just the nudge I needed to just believe in myself and go for it with my whole heart. Leslie is a walking and living example of what inspiring greatness in others truly is about and she will forever be a treasured confidant and mentor in my life.

I am scheduled to graduate this December 14. Many have asked what am I doing next and where am I planning on going. (No pressure, LOL!) Salons have approached me, I have visited salons and been offered jobs, but I want to find the right place at the right time.

Life is a series of doors; they open and they close. Some may see life as a series of pathways or roads. I see BOTH doors and roads. Completing my education at Aveda Institute Phoenix will bring me to an open door. Outside that door are many roads that can be taken so I want to choose wisely. My NYFW experience ignited a fire in me that was already simmering for High Fashion, Education and Editorial Work. Although I’m comfortable within a corporate structure, I seek to be creative, change scenery often, always continue my education and of most importantly, touch lives along the way.

I know without a doubt I personally want to stay Aveda all the way. I could see myself working as an assistant/apprentice to a seasoned Aveda Artist – watching, learning and growing. I want more hands-on time preferably in an educator’s environment in the fast paced world of Editorial and High Fashion. High goals, yes, but that is what Inspire Greatness is about! The standards are set high and they bring out the heart and passion in those who are open to continued learning, growing and adapting to change. My heart and mind are open to the doors that open for and pathways that cross before me. Aveda is MORE than just beauty – it’s about building rapport, trust, promoting wholeness, well-being, and building relationships. It’s about seeing things from a bigger picture and then zooming in on that picture to the very time and place we are at, in the present moment and just being in that space and time, focusing in on the needs of that one guest.♥

26 Aug Graduate Spotlight: Rae Black

We are pleased to feature our graduate and cosmetology educator, Rae Black! She graduated from Aveda Institute Denver in 2011 and just celebrated her one year anniversary as a cosmetology educator for Aveda Institute Phoenix. She has also launched her own business dialing into the world of hair extensions.

Q: What has your education provided for you in your career?

What I remember most about my school experience is my educators. I was so blessed to have the same ones through my journey and they supported me and helped me come into my own as an extension specialist and stylist. Carrie Bellus, Brad Van Dyke and Dale Le Monds allowed me to practice my extensions on the floor as a students and in class. With all this practice I was able to really perfect my skills, so when I graduated I knew what direction I was going in and I hit the ground running. My education provided me a stable environment and taught me life skills and more communication skills. It taught me to use my creativity and put my guests’ needs first and how to listen.

Rae BlackQ: Share how you are building your career.
These days I am still flying for Skywest as I have 11 years seniority now. I also teach part time at the Aveda Institute Phoenix under the guidance of Ericka Robinson and Katrina Bervin. I just hit my one year anniversary and I’m really proud of that. I have launched my own hair extensions line called Pink and Black Beauty Collection my Website is www.extensionbeautybyrae.com. My main goal is to grow my hair extension business by getting into local beauty supply stores. I want to distribute hair and be a consultant about extensions for Aveda salons. I host regularly-occurring extensions and braiding workshops at Aveda Institute Denver and at Aveda institute Phoenix. I also make wigs for those that have severe hair loss and I custom color the hair using Aveda hair color.
Q: What do you love most about Aveda?

The lifestyle. Aveda is about love and beautiful things. We make beautiful hair and make people feel good about themselves.

Q: What advice or tips would you share with our current students?

I would tell them to hang in there because school flies by fast and you have to take all the information you can from your educators. Whatever you put into your education, you’ll get in the end. When you put in 50 percent, you will be a mediocre hair stylist. When you put in 100 percent, you will hit the ground running.

Q: What does Inspire Greatness mean to you?

I would like to share how much I appreciate Dale and and Inspire Greatness. I remember during school always going in his office picking his brain about things, especially business. He is a great business man and family man and he cares about his students. I remember we use to make fun of him about his golfing out-fits and socks and he just laughed along with us –  it was great. He supported me and believed in me and his still does till this day.

You know you’re doing good by your students when they come back to work for you.
I also want to thank Brad for his love, mentorship and support. I consider him a real friend. I have talked to him about numerous things and he is always listening and has a solution and suggestions.

11 Aug Save Your Hands Master Series with LoraLee

LoraLee Kautz, Aveda Massage Coach and educator for Aveda Institute Denver has created an inspiring Master Series for our spa students that teaches techniques to help improve posture and increase longevity for estheticians and massage therapists.

“The goal is for you to feel better in your body years and years down the road than you do today. This workshop will teach you how to keep your body working well so you can be successful in your spa career for a long, long time – and feel great at the same time,” shares LoraLee.

LoraLee save your hands workshopCurrently, the average massage therapist or esthetician in this industry is only able to last about five years before the body begins to respond to the physical demands through aches, pains and injury. This Master Series is inspired to help practitioners enjoy longevity in their career by taking care of the body and preventing pain and injury. Loralee is passionate about helping others take care of themselves so she created this training to teach positive ergonomics and postures as a practitioner. Rooted in Ayurvedic philosophy, this class will guide you into learning how to take care of yourself so you can continue to take care of others, and be successful in the spa industry.

LoraLee trained at the Utah College of Massage Therapy and completed the 815.5-hour long professional Massage Therapy Program in 2000.  Upon graduation she was offered a position as the Career Services Counselor for UCMT and later a chance to be a Teaching Assistant for Professional Development and Reflexology classes. After working on the business side for a while, LoraLee began working hands-on in the spa industry including Sego Lily Day Spa in Layton, Ut where she grew to become the Massage Team Lead. Eventually life brought LoraLee and her family to Colorado where she joined the spa team at Aveda Institute Denver. She continues to grow and learn as she’s achieved multiple certifications and leads students to becoming the best massage therapists.
