06 Feb Comforting tea

Screen Shot 2014-02-05 at 9.54.27 PM

The moment you step into an AVEDA salon or Experience center you are greeted with a warm, delicious cup of comforting tea. It is deliciously sweet and flavorful without having any sugar or added-flavors. I would like to share a few  benefits as well as ingredient information, enjoy!

Peppermint and Licorice root give this a wonderful blend of sweet and refreshing. Drinking peppermint will help relieve stress as well as help clear up and congestion you may have. Peppermint is full of vital minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin A & C which will help with cold and flu. Licorice root is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which can help ease joint pain. There are many health reasons to drink AVEDA tea, but my #1 favorite is because it is absolutely delicious!

31 Jan Guest Blogger(s): Men’s Cutting Coaches Meagan MacPhee and Robert Kelly

Our Men’s Cutting Coaches, Megan and Robert, put together a weekly newsletter for our educators that highlights techniques, pedagogy, and products.  I loved this feature on the importance of workshops.  I hope you enjoy it, too!  ^AS

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” William Butler Yeats

I am sure we can all agree as educators that one of the things we hear the most from our Future Professionals is that they are afraid to take a service.  This seems to be especially true for men’s cuts.  How many times, if any, have they had the opportunity to work on a male guest?

Salon floor workshops during downtime may not be the all-inclusive fix to their fears, but it’s a great place to start!  As our team lead Carrie Bellus says,” the Salon floor is our largest classroom.”  In light of that, are we utilizing our time on the Salon floor to model techniques and to invite them to experience hand’s on during a workshop?

Our Future Professionals have the answer on where they feel they need further instruction.  Want to know what to show the FPs? Ask!  Once we have the information, 4mat a salon floor workshop and watch for your F.P’s ah-ha moments and celebrate the fact that you care enough about their education to deliver a better understanding of our curriculum. Glitter applause

Now that we’re half way through January and the excitement of your resolutions is getting less sparkly by the day, lets talk about keeping your resolutions.

1. Become accountable for your goals- Confide in a friend, significant other, or even social media about your goals. By doing this you are more likely to stick to your game plan, it doesn’t hurt to gain a few supports along the way.

2. Celebrate your little goals.-reward your self with your small goals! When you do this you are giving yourself motivation towards your BIG goals.

3.Give yourself some slack. Had an off day? That’s ok! We all do, just make sure to pick yourself back up and start again!

15 Jan The story behind Quinoa

So we all know that Quinoa is delicious but what does it do for our hair and where does it come from? When you are perusing your nearest AVEDA experience center you can find this key ingredient in the Damage Remedy line.

“Considered sacred by the Inca Indians for its valuable life-supporting nutrients, quinoa has flourished in the Peruvian Andes for over 5,000 years. Known in Quechua, the language of the Incas, as chisiya mama or “mother grain,” quinoa is very rich in protein more than all other grains. Today, Aveda sustainably sources quinoa for the protein in our Damage Remedy™ restructuring hair care” -AVEDA.com

22 Nov Aveda’s About-Face Approach to Exfoliation

With winter approaching, dry skin is on the rise, therefore we must consider what we are doing to exfoliate.  Find out more about Aveda’s approach to exfoliation as stated in the Spa Quarterly Newsletter:

“Q: What exfoliation ingredients does Aveda use and why?

A: Physical friction through touch, movement and massage is enough to remove surface layers of skin—simply walking in sand will exfoliate the feet. Particles ranging from rough and sharp to small and smooth can fine tune the degree of exfoliation. All of Aveda’s physical particle ingredients come from botanicals, such as bamboo, jojoba beads and walnut shells.

Aveda products rely on two naturally derived exfoliation ingredients, each with a different mechanism of action—salicylic acid and glucosamine. Combined with physical friction through touch, movement and massage, they can provide the benefits associated with microdermabrasion and glycolic acid peels.

Salicylic acid exfoliates by breaking the desmosome bonds between keratinocytes, allowing skin cells to be released. Most salicylic acid on the market today is synthesized from petroleum derivatives; however, Aveda’s salicylic acid is naturally derived from wintergreen. Glucosamine is a natural molecule that gently reduces cell adhesion by speeding up cell turnover and reducing cell reaggregation after the desmosome is broken. The most common source of glucosamine is shellfish; however, Aveda’s non-animal glucosamine is derived entirely from fermentation of specific fungi.

These naturally derived ingredients have helped Aveda products achieve clinical performance in smoothing and radiance on par with such procedures as microdermabrasion and glycolic acid peels, but with less of the associated redness and irritation.

— Cindy Angerhofer, Ph.D., Aveda Executive Director of Botanical Research”
