October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a participating brand of the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Aware Campaign, Aveda supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) for cruelty-free research. In alignment with our mission, donations from Aveda are used to explore the environmental cause and links to breast cancer. Consistent with our policy, the breast cancer research projects support by Aveda and does not involve animal testing but rather studies breast cancer risks in human volunteers.
The mission of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation is to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research. Since their founding in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder, BCRF has raised more than half a billion dollars for lifesaving research. Through a unique and streamlined grants program, we seek out the brightest minds in science and medicine and give them the necessary resources to pursue their best ideas. As a result, researchers are able to make discoveries and design new approaches to address all aspects of breast cancer—and do so in record time. Read Evelyn Lauder’s story here. In 2015-2016, BCRF will award $48.5 million in annual grants to over 240 scientists from top universities and medical institutions around the globe. Every hour of research BCRF funds improves outcomes and saves lives. But we still have more to do. The thousands of women and men suffering from breast cancer today depend on us. No institution can conquer this disease alone.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2016 are:
- About 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 61,000 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
- About 40,450 women will die from breast cancer.
Aveda and Inspire Greatness
Since 2001, Aveda has donated $3.7M to BCRF. This money comes not only from corporate contributions, but also from employees and guests who have an opportunity to donate to BCRF through fund-raising activities held by the Aveda network throughout the month of October.
From 2013-2015, Inspire Greatness contributed $57,872.25 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through fundraising and the sale of Limited Edition Hand Relief.
