28 Mar Alumni Spotlight: Sariah Lee

At Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes, we’re always so proud of our students and what they accomplish after graduating! That can make it hard for us to choose just one alumnus to feature on our blog because we have so many alumni we want to talk about! We wanted to highlight Sariah Lee for killing it on social media and in the Aveda network!

About Sariah Lee

Sariah is one of our more recent graduates, and was an exemplary student while with us at Aveda Institutes! She traveled with us to London Fashion Week and also participated in the North American Hairstyling Awards. She was a model student, and is now an outstanding cosmetologist with Pura Vida Salon & Spa in Park City, Utah. Here are some of the questions we got to ask Sariah:

Why did you choose Aveda Institute?

“I chose the Aveda Institute because I wanted to be part of an organization that is innovative, creative, focused on moving into the future while still caring for the world around them.”

Why did you choose to stay with Aveda after graduation?

“I chose to stay with Aveda after graduation for a few reasons:

  1. I love the mission and wanted to be a part of a salon that lived up to the mission.
  2. I absolutely love the color line and can’t imagine using another one.
  3. The people who are part of the Aveda network are so supportive of one another and care for each other. I wanted to surround myself with those people.”

What are your most popular salon services?

“One of my most popular services in the salon is my men’s haircuts.”

What is the greatest lesson you learned in school?

“The greatest lesson I learned in school is that I will never stop learning, even after I’ve been in the hair business for years. It’s never too late to learn, and you shouldn’t be afraid to fail, because from failing, you learn.”

Who is your Aveda icon and why?

My Aveda icon is Anne Skubis (the Director of Marketing for Inspire Greatness Aveda Institutes). She always has fun, fresh, creative work. More than just being a fantastic makeup artist, Anne also engages with people on a personal level, and you can tell that she truly cares about the people around her. Anne strives to inspire people and lift them up, and I aspire to live up to her example.

What are your top three tips for social media?

  1. ”Engage and interact with your followers. Respond to their likes and comments.
  2. Consistency is key. You want your page to be aesthetically pleasing and focused on what you want to convey to the audience. Is it hair? Makeup? Eyelash extensions? Stay consistent.
  3. It’s fun to post pictures of you in action because it makes your page more personal and you can more easily connect with the audience.”

What is your greatest accomplishment since graduating?

Two of my greatest achievements since graduating are:

  1. Finding a salon that is so supportive and positive.
  2. Building a consistent clientele.

It is one of the biggest compliments to me when someone decides they want to come back to me for their hair, makeup, or eyelash extensions.

20 Nov How to Help Your Hair Beat Winter Weather

When you talk about the changes that happen in the winter season, the most noticeable change is in temperature. For most places around the country there is also an abundance of snow. One of the biggest changes in winter that often goes unnoticed is the change in humidity. All of these changes work together to create a new hair care nightmare! We’ll look here today at a handful of tips that can help your hair put the “win” in winter!

Don’t Skimp on the Scalp

We wouldn’t be doing justice without considering all parts of the hair, especially the part where the hair grows out! The winter season can mean drier, arid climates in many places around the country. If you live in a place Arizona or Utah where the winter brings dry air, pay attention to your scalp health, especially if you already face challenges with flaky skin. Use moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, or even oils massaged into the scalp. Find what works best for you, and keep that skin moisturized and healthy!

Mind the Temperature

Your hair also needs plenty of moisturizing, just like your scalp does. However, it’s important to keep a delicate balance between the elements your hair is exposed to and how you take care of it. For example, you might want to go easy on the flat iron to keep your hair from becoming more brittle than the Mojave desert. At the same time you should always make sure your hair is completely dry before heading out each day. Even showering in excessively hot water can cause more problems! You can try blow drying with your dryer set on cool air to balance things out, for example. No matter what you choose, try to find what works best for you!

Trim Regularly

Dry weather can mean more split ends. Oh no! The good news is that split ends are really easy to keep under control with regular trips to your hair salon. Instead of waiting three or six months between haircuts, just keep an eye on your hair and consider scheduling a trim when you start seeing some of those nasty split ends. If you can’t repair it, trim it down!

Perfect Conditions for Conditioning

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, winter hair care is a game of moisture management! Conditioning is more of an “as needed” practice during other parts of the year. During winter, on the other hand, there are many people who need to condition daily to keep those silky locks from losing their looks! Using conditioner is really simple, just massage some into your hair and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cool or warm water. You can even consider getting a deep conditioning treatment.

What Works for You?

Everyone has hair that is unique to them, so not everything works the same! What do you do in the winter to keep your hair from drying out and becoming damaged? Share your tips with us on our facebook page!

16 Nov Why do People Love Cosmetology?

Cosmetology is a very exciting and creative field, but what is it about cosmo that people love most? Everyone has a different reason for choosing beauty school, but many people have common passions. Which one of these passions is yours?

The Love of Beauty

Beauty isn’t just the way that something looks, it’s a form of personal expression. Cosmetologists enter this field because they love helping people to show themselves in their brightest and most beautiful form. For many stylists, cosmetology is a place where they can explore their creative side and create masterful works of art!

The Passion for Service

One of the most common things cosmetologists say they love about their job is the opportunity to serve other people. It isn’t just about doing something for someone, it’s about helping someone feel better about themselves and brightening their day. The best cosmetologists aren’t just stylists or manicurists, they are people who really care about making someone happy. It’s so inspiring to see!

The Need for Hands-On

Sitting in school classrooms and dreading homework and exams is a living nightmare for lots of people. For those people who love a hands-on environment, this is where they can learn best and enjoy themselves at the same time. Cosmetologists are doers that get to work with their hands each and every day. The beautiful mind of a cosmetologist should never be chained to a desk or cubicle!

The Desire for Freedom

Many of our students frequently tell us that cosmetology is a road to freedom for them. Some choose to be stay-at-home parents and cut hair from home as a side hustle to support their family. Other cosmetologists are incurable entrepreneurs who want to open their own salons or stores and want to make sure they have the expertise they need to succeed. In any case, cosmetology provides students the freedom and flexibility to work wherever and whenever they want!

What Drives You?

Are you considering a career in cosmetology? We love what we do here at Inspire Greatness Aveda Institute, and it’s our goal to share that passion with the students that we teach. Learn more information about our cosmetology programs or reach out to us and we’ll have a representative contact you right away about how you can create a career fit for you!

16 Nov Inspiration from the RetroActive Collection NAHA 2017

Inspire Greatness Aveda Institute Represented at NAHA

The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) have come and gone once again, and what a blast it was! We couldn’t be more proud of Aveda Institute and its students for the awe-inspiring collections they created this year. As always we set high standards for the students and they blew right past them. The judges were wowed as three of the five best student collections nominees were Aveda Institute students. Aisling Campbell even went ahead to win!

It was not only our privilege to observe these students as they successfully competed, but we got in a little competition of our own! Our extraordinarily talented team at Inspire Greatness worked tirelessly to create some fantastic and inspiring looks as part of our new RetroActive collection. Here we’ll look at some highlights and takeaways from the team. You can also watch our behind the scenes YouTube video for a look at what it was like to put together such an exciting collection!

Heggy Gonzalez: Finding the Perfect Unicorn

Heggy was a shining example of persistence in creating this collection! She talks in the video about how exciting and chic the 60’s and 70’s were, and talked about how challenging it can be to capture that essence. Her favorite look was the bowl cut, and said that the hairpiece that was used needed to be colored seven times before they got the color just right! Heggy showed us that getting the perfect look isn’t always a product of luck, but one of hard work and persistence!

Brad Van Dyke: Make a Plan, and Plan to Adapt

Brad is the type who loves diving right into the action and working with his hands, but not before some careful planning and consideration. He works with an editorial mindset, which means he plans and prepares a concept ahead of time and creates around it. From that inspiration, he can start playing with the look on the models and put together a look that turns heads!

Anne Skubis: Let Your Art Shine

Anne likes to practice her art from a holistic approach. She works with her models from a wellness perspective with the goal to make the model feel beautiful and healthy. She does this so that her art can really shine. Happy models are beautiful models! Anne reminds us that it’s important to keep in touch with the human and emotional side of beauty.

Aveda Institute Inspires Greatness

This time of year is so exciting because we love having the opportunity to work together to create something beautiful that we can use to showcase our skills and inspire our students. Creating stunning looks isn’t just what beauty schools are about, it’s what we do.

These thrilling works of art are what we love to see from our talented instructors. For us it demonstrates that Aveda Institute isn’t just a beauty school, it’s a place where art and beauty comes to life. We want you to join us as we make the world more beautiful one collection at a time! Find out more information about our programs and how you can be our next premier talent!
